Cappuccinos and Eye Glasses

I confess to my one addiction: vanilla cappuccino. I love it first thing in the morning. Of course, it is loaded with cream, sugar (artificial) and vanilla and possesses absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. Nevertheless, it’s my morning go-to.
My husband, on the other hand, loves his strong coffee with a touch of half and half. It should be stated, he is the reason I became addicted. He introduced me to cappuccinos while we were on our first road trip together. It’s clearly because of him that I’ve been hooked ever since.
It’s like when Cleve misplaces his eye glasses, dress shoes or the TV remote. He’ll ask me, “Where did you put the . . . ?” or “What did you do with my . . . ?” It’s simply convenient to blame someone else and at times, quite humorous.
However, this “blame-shifting” can become serious. Didn’t Adam do the same thing in the garden when he told God that Eve made him eat the forbidden fruit? The rest is history, as one would say. I know I’m comparing “apples” to cappuccinos, but the point is we have all been guilty of shifting the blame to someone or something else.
Why do we do it? We could easily blame our original great, great, great, etc. grandfather, Adam. He certainly was the first. But, like it or not, we always have a choice. We are the only ones who can choose for our self to take responsibility for our attitude, words and behavior.
There are times I am so overwhelmed with what God did for us. I sit in wonder and amazement. His plan provides freedom from sin, guilt, judgment, and shame. He never wants us burdened down with any of these debilitating conditions. He knew we couldn’t handle it. Through Jesus, we are released from blame, whether that’s directed towards others or ourselves.
Even though you were once distant from him, living in the shadows of your evil thoughts and actions, he reconnected you back to himself. He released his supernatural peace to you through the sacrifice of his own body as the sin-payment on your behalf so that you would dwell in his presence. And now there is nothing between you and Father God, for he sees you as holy, flawless, and restored . . . (Colossians 1: 21-22).
He sees me “holy, flawless, and restored”! How refreshing and lovely are those words to my soul. I want to love Him back so much more and love others, too. It’s the heart of the Gospel. It’s what enables me to be kind to myself and others.
I find myself chuckling when Cleve asks me where I put his glasses. I can say with a smile, “They’re on top of your head, Honey. Just where you left them.”
